Sonic 3 & Knuckles Part 6: Launch Base Zone (Super Knuckles)
460The first thing you should notice is that there's no Death Egg in the background of Act 1. Sonic destroyed it at this point, remember?
Besides that, there's not much different about Knuckles' Act 1 of this zone until the end, where the entrance to the tower Sonic went into is gone. So Knuckles now has to climb up the outside of it instead, leading to a different path altogether. The Act 1 boss is the same as Sonic & Tails', but there's two of them now.
If it weren't for being Super Knuckles at the time, this would be an annoying battle. Act 2 starts Knuckles out in the underground plumbing region of the zone.
This place is supposed to be filled with water like in Sonic's version of the Act, but maybe Angel Island's floating in the air off of the planet's ocean may have something to do with its low amount.
Eventually, you'll reach and break a clog that fixes this issue, but if you don't have a Water Shield at the time, you'll now have to escape the now-flooding area quickly before Knuckles drowns. This is assuming that you don't have the Water Shield at the time.
This will eventually send Knuckles into one of the main routes of Act 2 that Sonic & Tails can get through normally. Knuckles will then quickly reach a wall that he can break, and go through a pipe that takes him up to the skies towards the path of his Act 2 bosses.
In the solo Sonic 3, Launch Base originally had three bosses for Sonic to fight. While Sonic only fights the first and second bosses in this game, Knuckles has to fight the second and third ones, the third one being the original final boss for Sonic & Tails in the standalone Sonic 3.
After beating the Egg Robo's Big Arm, the Egg Robo then destroys the pipe with the same bomb he used on Knuckles at the beginning. Luckily Knuckles was able to jump off the pipe he was standing under, making him fall right into Mushroom Hill.
And that's the last of Super Knuckles. I went through a bunch of "Magnetic Spheres" Bonus Stages because I'm making sure I beat this playthrough with a regular cap of 99 lives.
