Sonic 3D Blast was ported to the Saturn to make up for Sonic X-Treme sudden cancellation, leaving Sega customers without a Sonic game developed for their latest console.
This port could never repair the damage already done, but it offered improved graphics, and completely different soundtrack and special stages.
It also has loading times. That cannot be good.
Sometimes the graphics can be cluttered compared to the original Genesis/Megadrive version, Spring Stadium is the worst offender in my opinion.
The soundtrack is composed by Richard Jacques and leaning towards ambient and euro music.
It is really good but I prefer in general the original one, with the usual Sonic catchy beats. Also, Gene Gadget is the best track on both soundtracks.
The special stages are based on Sonic 2, and they are probably my favourite special stages ever in Sonic games, they are that good in my opinion, albeit a bit easy.
All things considered, the Director's Cut is several steps ahead, courtesy of the improved gameplay mostly, but this version has a few advantages. And loading times.
It would be cool to have at least a way to toogle the soundtracks, or even better to enjoy both the Saturn special stages and the DC changes to the gameplay.
