Episode 1 is kind of a disgrace. This game was proof that Sega could give Sonic fans the bare minimum and still sell a decent amount of copies.

While this is fine in the world of capitalism, it didn't sit right with critics and fans, and I believe the backlash was part of the driving force for why there are so many differences between episode 1 and episode 2 of Sonic 4. Because of the disappointment for episode 1, most fans didn't give episode 2 a chance. This ended the episodic saga which could have gone on to make many more improved sequels... something we'll discuss in a future video!
