Sonic Adventure DX (PC) - Icecap Tails speedrun in 1:14.08
5About 2 years ago I uploaded a time of 1:29.76 for this level, which is a run I was and still am very happy with, as it only used basic movement and the two super jumps and I was under the impression that it was extremely clean. Never having put a ton of effort into learning hard Tails strats, this was satisfactory to me. Recently though, with ESA submissions having opened up, a number of SADX runners who are planning on attending (including me) were working on putting together a submission for an All Stories relay run for the event, and because we had 4 potential Sonic runners and 4 potential Knuckles runners, but no one for Tails and Big, I ended up with Tails. Originally I wasn't too happy about this, since I always considered this story to be kind of out of my comfort zone and mostly just a neccesary evil to deal with as part of All Stories, but since a while I've had a bit of an interest in working on my Tails strats, so now that I potentially had to play Tails in front of a large audience in July, this was a good motivator to finally do that.
Icecap being the big center piece level and make-or-break skip of Tails' story was of course gonna be the first one I wanted to tackle since I had never done these skips before. This run took me a couple of days of practicing to get, but I'd say I have a decent enough feel for these clips now for them to not feel like a complete crapshoot, though the run consistency still isn't really there yet. Funnily enough while doing this I had a lot of issues with the 1st superjump, which really frustrated me cause that was a trick I always found quite easy. Turns out my issue was that I started jumping onto the ramp with too straight of an angle, you apparently gain more height if you come in more diagonally. Once that issue was solved, it didn't take very long anymore until I had a full run together with both clips and all 3 superjumps. Pretty happy with that time, though it can obviously be done faster, since I very deliberately slowed down before the clips so that I have an easier time to line myself up.
Honestly visually I really love this level with all the skips implemented, because they just line up so perfectly. The way each of the individual tricks drops you off perfectly right in front of the next trick. There's no downtime in between, and none of the big skips skip any cool smaller tricks. All the tricks are perfectly spaced out throughout the level and lead perfectly into each other, as if the level was designed specifically for them
