After boarding the train heading back to Station Square, Tails goes to Casinopolis to take on Sonic in a one-on-one race to collect the white Chaos Emerald. Tails was able to find the Emerald sooner than Sonic, but after they left Casinopolis Eggman/Robotnik sprayed a sleep-inducing gas upon them in order to get a hold of their Emerald. Tails realizes that they only have one Emerald while Eggman/Robotnik has two; they'd better get moving.

Tails finds an ice stone in an alleyway by Casinopolis; he has no idea what to do with it in Station Square, so he heads off to the Mystic Ruins again to see if there's anything he can use this stone for. Tails finds an icy keyhole in one of the caves of the Mystic Ruins, so he uses that to enter a cave that's been iced over and head to the Ice Cap. Since there's an avalanche when Sonic and Tails arrive at Ice Cap, the two have a snowboard race down the mountain to see who can get to the green Chaos Emerald the quickest; Tails won again.

Sonic and Tails later meet up with their friendly rival Knuckles by the waterhole in the Mystic Ruins, but Knuckles doesn't seem to be taking them kindly on this occasion for whatever reason. Tails fights Knuckles to bring him to his senses; that, of course, only made Tails lose both of the Chaos Emeralds that he was carrying. Eggman/Robotnik was secretly waiting for them in the waterhole the whole time, so he takes the two Emeralds and feeds them to Chaos so that he will evolve to his fourth level. Seeing that fighting Chaos 4 is inevitable, Tails fights Chaos off without too much trouble, and Eggman/Robotnik and Chaos then flee to the Egg Carrier so that they can plan to elevate their plot even further.
