Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a platform video game developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Mega Drive. It is the second game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and introduced the protagonist's friend Miles "Tails" Prower, controllable by a second player. In the story, Sonic and Tails must stop the series' antagonist, Dr. Eggman, from stealing the Chaos Emeralds to power his space station, the Death Egg.

Development began in November 1991. Its staff was made up of both Japanese and Americans, unlike the first game in the franchise, which was produced only by Japanese. The game was directed by Masaharu Yoshii and produced by Shinobu Toyoda. The game's design was led by Hirokazu Yasuhara and the music was composed by Masato Nakamura.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has sold over six million copies, making it the second best-selling game on the Mega Drive, behind only the first game in the franchise. It is cited as one of the best video games of all time, receiving praise for its level design, visuals, and music, although its multiplayer has been criticized. It was re-released on multiple platforms; a remastered version developed using the Retro Engine was released for iOS and Android in December 2013. Two direct sequels were made: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, released in 1994.
