I've recently heard about a new Sonic fan-game that got fully released and I played through it until I completed it. It was great, although I don't think it reaches the same highs of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, especially since there isn't that many levels to play through and not many of them are that memorable. It's also currently filled with game breaking bugs which had me restart some of the levels several times, so maybe it's best to wait for a couple of more months until they get ironed out.

If you played this game like I did, you might remember the intro level called "Zone Zero" that you played through when you started a new game as Sonic & Tails. It's the premonition to the events of the game and you get to play with Super Sonic and Super Tails.
Now, if this wasn't patched yet, you should be able to select "Zone Zero" as Nack the Weasel and the other bonus unlockable character (not Knuckles). It seems to be unintentional since the arrow for selecting "Zone Zero" on the level select screen doesn't show up when you choose Nack as your character but you can select it anyway. Nack doesn't have a super form, and since there are no rings, he dies to the boss in one hit. However, he does have his gun, which is insanely helpful at keeping a distance away from the boss. It's really easy to jump into Eggman's rapidly approaching laser though, so you have to watch for the laser and jump at the right time.
I already mentioned it before, but you can play this level as the other bonus unlockable character. Unfortunately, he can't reach the boss because of a pit in the middle of the map that requires you to use Tails' flying ability to get out of it. Maybe if you spin-dash very, very precisely you could jump over it, but that's unlikely in my book. Not like that character has no means of fighting the boss aside from the standard spin-jump anyway...

Once you beat the boss, a cut-scene is supposed to start. However, because you're not playing as Sonic & Tails, the game crashes, which is kind of ironic considering how your character is about to charge into Eggman before he calls the arms to hold you.
