Cool Edge Act 1-2

This stage has a hyphenated number. You all know what that means--it's a downloadable stage! If you've seen Dragon Road Act 1-2 before this, you'll know what to expect: Excruciating difficulty rivaling that of the old 8-bit games. These stages are so difficult that some people initially thought fans made these, under the belief that no major game company would ever make stages like these in a modern game.

Chances are you haven't seen the regular Cool Edge Act 1. It's pretty plain, actually. As the third day stage in the game, Cool Edge is pretty merciful. Obstacles certainly show up wherever Sonic travels, but they generally tend to be out of the way or are too slow for Sonic. The main obstacle, of course, is Sonic traveling on water: The game introduces this mechanic in this stage. To make sure Sonic gets a proper introduction, the water areas are free of obstacles and offer plenty of land (or ice floes, I guess) for Sonic to take a break on.

Not so in Act 1-2. Pillars of crystals that hurt if Sonic touches them have emerged from the waters, and Eggman has stuffed the ice floes full of enemies. As Sonic must be traveling full speed to continue to skid on the water surface, and taking damage stops Sonic instantly, touching the crystals means Davy Jones's Locker for Sonic. Obviously, these aren't the only obstacles, as you'll see for yourself.

The final portion of this stage involves a pretty long bobsled ride, not unlike the kind seen in the Wii/PS2 version...but with much much more obstacles. Some of them are incredibly hard to dodge, and the designers put in some moving crystals, which never appeared in the original stage. It certainly threw me for a loop when I played it.
