Sonic Xtreme V40 Build Real Hardware
This is a leaked tech demo of Sonic Xtreme for the Sega Saturn, the V40 build featuring the fisheye lens. I downloaded the ISO (link in description), created a CUE with ImgBurn, burned to a blank disc and loaded it on my Saturn using a Pseudo Saturn Cart. The build is in very early stages. You can't collect rings or defeat enemies, collision detection is basic, and the animation does not work correctly. The Demo also struggles to maintain a decent framerate. When it was originally leaked, the code wasn't suitable for running on the Sega Saturn. Fortunately, fans in the community were able to modify it so that it would.
Despite the shortcoming of this Tech Demo, I quite like it. The graphics style is the closest match to what we saw at E3 back in the day and it seems to achieve that aesthetic quality quite well. The fisheye lens does give everything a nice smooth curve look. The sprites seem to affect the framerate more than the geometry, maybe because of the animation. There seems to be some momentum physics to the movement as well and it feels like playing a Sonic game.
The Game takes ages to load up. The text displayed on screen after the Sega Logo disappears is there for the actual loading duration, about 40 seconds, so if you do try this at home don't make the mistake of thinking the burn hasn't worked.
