The eagle-eyed folks over at NeoGAF have uncovered a patent filed by Sony for what looks like a new Switch-inspired handheld device.
The patent was filed back in 2015, and highlights a handheld device that looks very much like a tablet with two controller halves on either side. It looks as though the side controller pieces may also be detachable similar to the Switch and its joycons, though they aren't explicitly shown as being removable from the device. The side controllers also bear a striking resemblance to the Dualshock 4, almost as if someone split it in half and attached them to the sides of a tablet.
It's important to note that not all patents end up becoming products, and after witnessing the trainwreck that was the PlayStation Vita, we can't imagine Sony would be so keen on returning to the handheld market so quickly. Perhaps they'll wait to see how the Nintendo Switch fairs before diving back in.
