I found this bug while doing some batch rendering with Sony Vegas 12. This fixed the tmp file format issue that sometimes pops up when rendering through the batch render. I am not sure if the normal rendering process sometimes does this as well but I have heard that it does. I am not sure if this applies to any version but 12. I would also note that the output file extension is sometimes missing so it may say .mp4.tmp or just .tmp. If the file extension is missing you can try to change it to your output but it only works if vegas finished the render but did not change the file extension.
