Soul Blade [PS1] - play as STANDARD (unused character)
This is a play-through using STANDARD in the PS1 version of Soul Blade / Soul Edge. Read on below for more information...
Standard is an unused character in the game, which obviously means that he is an unplayable character.
The video is structured in 2 sections:
-- 1st section will show Arcade Mode being completed with Standard;
-- 2nd section will show him being selected in Edge Master Mode and locking the game
Here is the information about the character:
===== About STANDARD =====
---- Standard appears to be somewhat of a "template", "placeholder" or "test" character, and is NOT used anywhere in the game. You can only see and play as this character by using alternative methods.
---- As you can see in the video, the character uses Mitsurugi as the character model, as well as having Mitsurugi's moveset and Command List. In-fight, the name underneath the lifebar is "Mitsurugi" (unsurprisingly).
---- Being an unused/secret character, he cannot wield any other weapon besides his default sword, the Korefuji.
---- His sword moves and recovery from them are very slow, it's almost as if he is carrying a high-weighing weapon.
---- He has very low health, which means that he receives very high energy depletion.
---- He has a very small sized light trail during his sword moves.
---- Some of his sword strikes seem to have lesser range. Sometimes, some strikes can completely miss the opponent despite the sword touching him/her.
---- He does not have the ponytail like regular Mitsurugi has in this costume.
---- On the character select screen, his large portrait is the generic hidden character '?' image.
---- On the versus screen, his icon is the generic hidden character '?' image.
---- When you win a match with him, the announcer calls him "Mitsurugi" (unsurprisingly).
---- He uses Mitsurugi's voices (unsurprisingly).
---- When you complete Arcade Mode with him, it freezes the game because it tries to load an ending.
---- If you select him in Edge Master Mode, he freezes the game after the messed up intro.
---- In summary, due to the fact that he receives high energy depletion and has slow sword moves/recovery, it appears that he is a character with the lowest possible stats. Also, the fact that his weapon's light trails are small suggests that he may indeed be a 'template' character to be used as a 'base' to build the other characters on.
---- Or alternatively, it is also known that the Western Mitsurugi clone fighter, Arthur, was meant to appear in Soul Blade/Edge. Therefore it is a possibility that Standard was meant to be created into Arthur, using Mitsurugi as the template.
===== About PS1 Soul Blade =====
The PS1 version of the game is one of the all-time greats on the console, and is one of the best 'conversion/port of an arcade game'. Aside from the loading times (which are very short anyway) it's virtually arcade perfect. It helped that the arcade original ran on hardware that was already based on the PS1 hardware.
The PS1 version has tons of features that are not found in the arcade original. For example, the port has 2 extra remixed soundtracks, new character costumes, new weapons, cinematic endings for the characters, the superb Edge Master Mode and more.
