Around 100 years of development between these generations on a drawing board but more than that. From implementation of Excelsior 1 1st Gen to Excelsior 2 Class we see around 100 years of Engineering Advancement...

To translate that into this game means power, not just more for shields and weapons but for everything else as well. We limit 1st gen impulse thrusters numerically to keep these from being too similar, we also throttle the available power by not having extra warp cores, extra auxiliary cores, and even the shuttles when docked have more limited power available.

The trick to doing this kind of thing is working out how much thrust for scale. That can be done a few ways but can be undone by too much available power as well. Some of your designs in Vanilla can probably fly a lot better than you realize by just adding more power.

We utilize that thinking to make these generations of ships behave differently. A bit like using fewer Gyros in vanilla to make a ship turn slower, we can do that here as well. But Excelsior was top tier when she launched (the second time.) Making it turn slow wouldn't be authentic, and making the newer generation turn 2x as fast would be awkward so we settle for turning about .75 faster.

Measure everything mentally, then apply the numbers that make sense.

My ships are available here for tinkering. https://mod.io/u/btaylor00744/?_sort=-date_live
