This is Space Megaforce for the Super Nintendo, played by me on the normal difficulty level. This was played using a real SNES console and Space Megaforce game pak, but I recorded it onto a Betamax tape first since I didn't have a video capture device when I made this playthrough. My final score in this run was 5,622,830 points.

Space Megaforce flat-out kicks ass when it comes to the gameplay. It feels like a more refined version of Blazing Lazers or Super Star Soldier for the TurboGrafx-16, which isn't exactly a coincedence: Compile was responsible for developing both Blazing Lazers and Space Megaforce (even though the title screen of Blazing Lazers only mentions Hudson Soft).

Running on the more powerful SNES hardware, the graphics and sound are much better than the TurboGrafx-16 games, bu they're still a bit weak as far as SNES games go. The music is a bit bland and muffled (though it does use all 8 sound channels), and sound effects are very muffled. As for the graphics, they're a very mixed bag: from a technical standpoint, they're amazing, with lots of special effects, transparancies, and color cycling; but from a visual design standpoint, they're quite bland and generic. Stage 2 is a prime example of these attributes.

Despite the mediocre audio and average graphics, the gameplay is simply topnotch. What's truely amazing is just how little slowdown there is in this game. About the only time this game can slow down is when you use a bomb when there's lots of enemies on the screen, and even then, it's only for a few seconds, which is tolerable on even the Turbografx-16 or the Genesis, but is astounding on the slower SNES, especially considering how much is going on at any given time.

This is one of my favorite games on the SNES, and is certainly one of, if not THE best shooter available on the SNES.

NOTE: Outside of the USA, this game was known as Super Aleste, making it part of the same series as M.U.S.H.A. (Musha Aleste) and Robo Aleste.
