Super Valis IV (SNES): Full Game on Normal Difficulty
5This is Super Valis IV for the SNES, played by me on Normal difficulty. As usual, this was recorded from a real SNES console and Super Valis IV cartridge onto a Betamax cassette, then uploaded onto my PC. I tried uploading this video several months ago, and YouTube would never finish processing it. So I re-recorded it onto my PC (the original PC recording had some serious sound sync issues, which may have thrown the YouTube processor off), and now it works!
Super Valis IV (SV4) is a "remix" of Valis IV (V4) for the PC-Engine CD-ROM2, similar to how Castlevania: Dracula X on the SNES was a remix of the Japan-only Dracula X: Rondo of Blood for the PC-Engine Super CDROM2. Many Valis fans don't like SV4; I, on the other hand, think it's one of the best Valis games ever made. It may not have the same level of cutscenes and style that other Valis games have, but SV4 delivers on gameplay. The length of the game seems just right, the difficulty is fair and doesn't generally rely on cheap hits and silly exploits (though the final boss can be a pain), and the game provides just enough variety and action to keep things interesting. The item inventory system adds a nice bit of strategy, too. The game keeps track of score during play; however it neither saves high scores nor displays the final score when you beat the game, which are pretty big oversights if score is going to be included in a game. The game has 2 difficulty levels: Normal and Hard, which add to the replay value (there's also a hidden Easy mode as well).
Compared to V4, SV4 has better graphics, better sound effects and music (in my opinion), and much more reasonable gameplay. Overall, compared to other SNES games, SV4 is good, but doesn't really do anything special. It's fun and enjoyable, but sometimes it feels a bit generic.
