SpacEscape – a Science Learning Game
"The SpacEscape project (https://harrisburgu.edu/spacescape) is an innovative game developed by students and faculty at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, available on both desktop and virtual reality platforms. It is designed to educate middle school students about space science while simultaneously fostering their problem-solving skills. We hope to showcase this game including both desktop and Virtual Reality version during the summit.
This project was funded by a Presidential Research Grant from Harrisburg University. The game is set in the Solar System, where players take on the role of a young scientist who is tasked with following a series of clues to reunite a missing girl named Lucy and her pet dog Spark. The clues are based on real-world science concepts, such as gravity, atmosphere, and seismic activity.
The game has been well-received by students and teachers. In a previous study of SpacEscape, data indicated that SpacEscape significantly improved students’ science knowledge test scores regardless of their in-game performance. In addition, students enjoyed playing SpacEscape in their class (Liu et al., 2023). Teachers also reported that the game helped their students develop problem-solving skills.
The SpacEscape project is an example of how games can be used to promote STEM education. It offers an immersive and enjoyable learning environment, enabling students to explore space science through challenging and rewarding gameplay. With its blend of entertainment and education, we believe SpacEscape project can server as a valuable resource for researchers and educators at the conference. "
