Spear Of Destiny: Übermutant (Pistol Start, I Am Death Incarnate) [100%]
Holy hell, what a start this one has! The guys at id Software (or ID as the logo looked back then) weren't taking any prisoners when they came up with this map.
The initial skirmish is horrible to say the least, and the odds are balanced against you in a spectacular fashion. Remember my idea of killing multiple SS before grabbing a Machinegun? It really does apply here. If all goes well, you can get an extra 10 rounds out of this strategy, which while in the long run may not seem particularly worthwhile (there is a LOT of ammo to grab later on), makes a huge difference in dealing with the 18-strong shitstorm at the start. The more SS you can murder with your pistol before having to grab a Machinegun, the better.
Rather typically I get no such luck and mow down more Officers and Guards than anything before having to get that automatic weapon, but if anything that serves to show that it's still possible to emerge victorious.
Once that is over, it's time for a game of 'duck & cover' while accessing the first secret, and with it, the mighty Chaingun.
From here on out, never unequip the Chaingun. Seriously. Almost every encounter until you hit that exit will require a storm of lead. With the infamous & hated Mutant occupying several areas (in addition to the SS and Officer hordes... particularly the SS), there's no point in trying to take out the few lowly Guards with the Machinegun. Forget it, just keep that Chaingun loaded and ready for action at all times.
Now, there's a locked door directly ahead of the start, but you're in for one hell of a skirmish to unlock it. Be on guard at all times and destroy absolutely anything that moves, because there's no chance of losing their attention here. It's also advisable to kill off the foes wandering around the inner chamber, if just to stop them chipping away. It seems like a bad idea seeing as their ammo is currently unreachable, but it really does pay off overall.
Once you get the key, you *should* have cleared out most (if not all) of the enemies in the central area through the pillars. Not only does this now result in a fair amount of ammo for the taking, but also allows you to concentrate on the main subject of this map...
"..."
Of course, he's just as silent as his regular cohorts; 'he's dead, and dead men tell no tales', to paraphrase the Hint Manual.
Dealing with the Übermutant isn't too tricky, even if he is the fastest boss (perhaps even enemy) in the game; like all bosses, he can be coerced into pausing to shoot by getting up close (preferably while firing to release the contents of his stomach) and ducking behind a corner until he's wasted. The only thing to watch out for is his speed; if you're slow on the offensive, he'll run rings around you and smear you across the floor with that chest-mounted Chaingun.
"UUUUAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!!!"
Once this monster enters a second (and hopefully permanent this time) death by spilling his guts, take his key and head for the other set of locked doors. Besides one last secret, there are a few more Mutants left (how predictable), so keep that Chaingun ready for a final couple of spins before you even contemplate leaving. They WILL kill you if you're not expecting them.
Other than that, nothing more to be cautious of (except maybe a few SS or Officers stuck around the back -- sometimes it happens).
Happy hunting!
