DOOM: You Can't Kill Me! (Player Ghost 'Bug')
Well you probably can, but you'll have to try a lot harder now or just wait until I kill myself. A stupid idea results in a messy death, an impression of a gory pancake, and a sudden idea giving a chance of pseudo-redemption.
Then the video started being recorded.
Yes, it's the infamous 'ghost' bug... but this time it's affecting a player's actions. Extraordinary.
Now, this NEVER happens during regular gameplay, because players can never be revived/resurrected by any means, only respawn with that poxy capgun and 50 peas to dink harmlessly of big monsters. It would take one amazingly stupid Arch-Vile (and a fucking big hack into the code) to bring a player back to life during a standard run-around. So before you ask, I used the 'Resurrect' command in ZDoom's console.
Right, that explains everything.
So how are ghosts affected anyway? What are they allowed to phase through and generally clamber over?
One-sided lines might as well not exist. Walls like this are completely ineffective at blocking ghosts, meaning large sections of maps can be circumvented and there's nothing that anyone/anything can do about it.
Two-sided lines and what they make up though remain as effective obstacles as ever; ghosts can only climb the same heights as their 'live' forms, although unlike monsters, player ghosts can (much like their living counterparts) walk off ledges of any height.
Items can still be picked up. You may be a ghost, but you're still perfectly entitled to pick up items in the same way any living player would. You'll just have to be a bit more precise, because...
Monsters can still do damage, provided that the player remains perfectly still; the width of any ghost is reduced to 1, meaning that even the slightest change in position will result in a missed shot and a cheap laugh. This is also why picking up items seems a bit trickier -- the reduced radius means.
Triggering lines though, this is where it all goes wrong. Using switches and doors is still possible, Gunfire triggers of course still work too, but activating a line by walking over it is a thing of the past, thanks to the change in the player's radius. Meaning this map can't be exited.
Which is why it's only pseudo-redemption and an act of petty revenge before being made to fuck off to the afterlife for good by my own hand.
Oh well. Was fun.
