Spec Ops: The Line (Gameplay #6) - The Horror [ENDING]
Spec Ops: The Line has been one of the biggest surprises of the year so far (together with the equally compelling but very different Binary Domain). Despite a short campaign, traditional shooter mechanics and some unfortunate gameplay issues, SO:TL is surely one of my most worthwile gaming investments in quite some time. If Planescape Torment asked "what can change the nature of a man", Spec Ops invites the player to think about "what is the nature of a man who kills countless people and honestly believes that to be a good solution?". At the end of the day, the problem which SOTL tries to address is not Western imperalism or even the horrors of war in general; it's the player of these inherently violent video games. In other words, Spec Ops: The Line is one giant head trick - a long con disguised as a singleplayer campaign - and the joke is entirely on you. That it's also a rather fun game to play is both remarkable and deeply (as well as intentionally) ironic.
