Remembrances of Games Past, Part #38 - Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Apart from some strangely over-sized doors and and comically sexualized female soldiers, I have to admit that I remember few things about Gray Matter's Return to Castle Wolfenstein after my first and only playthrough of the game back in 2001, but I think I did have quite a bit of fun with this reboot of the venerable Wolfenstein franchise (as with the slightly underrated Raven Software sequel from 2009). What is most striking about these earlier FPSs when returning to them a decade later is just how punishingly fast-paced and open-ended they are, with labyrinthine levels which can be quite tricky to navigate since hand-holding (not always a bad thing) is kept at a bare minimum. Also, there's no way my poor, increasingly middle-aged reflexes are going to keep up with all those lightning-fast and extremely trigger-happy Nazi enemies...
