Airing on MTV allowed the creators a little more creative freedom and for the first time in a Spider-Man series characters were allowed to die on screen and there was some (mild) bad language.

With Neil Patrick Harris as Spider Man and Lisa Loeb as Mary Jane it also had an incredible guest voice cast including Michael Clarke Duncan reprising his role as The Kingpin/Wilson Fisk from the Daredevil feature film released earlier in 2003.

Fans were left confused because the Spider-Man: The New Animated Series episodes aired out of order, for example the two episodes that aired first were actually episodes 4 and 8. The DVD boxset and corrected this. Fans were also miffed when the animated series didn’t actually tie in all that well with the Spiderman sequel.
