I was reading about salmonid lifecycles as part of my marine biology course's section on the R-strategy of reproduction (rapid birth of many organisms, most of whom die), as opposed to the K-strategy (slow birth of few organisms, most of whom survive). The manta rays are a prime example of the K-strategy.
I realised the description of "jack" salmon matches the reproductive behaviour of the Splatoon Smallfries exactly. If this was intentional, then, good job, character designers.
