Splatterhouse 2 (Genesis) Playthrough
A playthrough of Namco's 1992 horror-themed action game for the Sega Genesis, Splatterhouse 2.
Splatterhouse 2 takes place a few months after the epic conclusion of the original Splatterhouse ( • Splatterhouse (TurboGrafx-16) Playthr... ). Rick finds out that Jennifer is still alive and sets out for the mansion that sits hidden behind the burnt down ruins of the first one. He dons the mask once again, prepared to beat everything in his path to a bloody pulp.
The gameplay is virtually identical to the first game's - you punch, kick, and slide tackle your way through a wide assortment of gross things, and they reward your efforts by exploding in ostentatious plumes of bodily fluids. Splatterhouse 2 difficulty level is comparable to the original's, too, but features longer stages and more elaborate set-pieces.
It looks pretty good, overall. The colors are a bit garish and the heavy dithering effects give it a rougher look than Splatterhouse's TurboGrafx-16 port, but the sequel's larger cart size has been put to good use. The graphics feature much more variety and detail, and the animation has been greatly improved. The music isn't as good, though, and the digital effects are still super raspy and distorted.
Splatterhouse 2 is a console exclusive that feels like it just strutted out of the arcades and on to your Genesis, and it's awesome. I loved it.
(It was also later included as an unlockable bonus in the Splatterhouse reboot for PS3/Xbox 360, and I believe it was the only M-rated game that got published on the Wii's Virtual Console.)
