Splatterhouse was a gloriously violent attempt by Namco in the late eighties to capture the look and feel of eighties horror movies of the period into an arcade game.

While this TurboGrafx port is infact a toned down version of the arcade classic, I'm willing to say Namco still succeeded in reproducing the horror elements they gunned so heavily for in this game. The tense music, bloody animations and grotesque enemies make this one hard to forget stylistically.

Even so, without this kind of understanding, it is easy to see why critics would otherwise slam Splatterhouse, approaching it as if any other standard sidescroller of the period.Truly, it's simple controls and limited depth, outside of branching pathways in some of the levels, betray the obvious promise in it's visual design and premise. Irrespective of that, the series is deserving of more commercial acclaim
