You've been warned.
If you read through the notes and scraps of lore scattered across the index, the backstory seems to be this:
You play as either Jodi McClintock or Jackie Stern, two engineering students who formed a startup together to research theories of time travel they had. The two have a falling out-- Jodi gets a job offer at a biotech firm and leaves to do genetics research, while Jackie continues on to found Gravitas, a research company that ultimately develops a rudimentary form of time travel. The earliest form of time travel is used as an energy source, which not only helps alleviate the energy crisis being suffered through on earth (the notes hint at a dystopian future where resources are scarce, the earth is coated in a thick blanket of smog, and countries fight wars over fuel), but also creates promise that interstellar travel and colonization of distant planets can be possible.
Either Jodi's research gets hamstrung by events happening on the dystopian earth, or Jackie intentionally sabotages her career-- either way, Jodi is forced to come work for Jackie as a result. She works on the technology to clone duplicants, while the other members of Gravitas work on the time travel stuff, both as a renewable source of power for the colony (it seems that the Printing Pod is powered by this technology), and also perhaps the interstellar journey itself.
At some point however, something goes wrong. Either the earth is destroyed by all the time technology and Gravitas launches its colony in response, or the launch of the time-space traveling interstellar colony causes a disaster, or the launch happens but miss-shoots and you end up in the middle of an asteroid in a dimension/timeline where the earth no longer exists, but either way, it's quite possible you're the last of humanity.
The notes and emails and journals you collect also feature a lot of the duplicants going about their day-to-day lives at Gravitas. Ellie and Joshua have a lot of conversations where Ellie makes sarcastic remarks about other duplicants and the kind-hearted Joshua defends them, Otto has imposter syndrome, but overcomes it with the help of Mi-Ma, who in turn is helped by Otto to overcome her unfamiliarity with the company's new technology, and various members of the Gravitas staff start coming to the realization that Gravitas's biotech division has started a shady cloning program-- and it's worse than they imagine as well, as Jackie is asking Jodi to develop a sort of mind control program into clones.
As for what happens through the duplicant you send through the temporal tear... well, currently nothing happens. 60 cycles later they come back. If you research the temporal tear, you find the only resource on it is abysallite (along with tier 4 and 5 artifacts), and that's it.
