Sports Saturday #28 - Lakers vs. Celtics and the NBA Playoffs (Genesis/MegaDrive)
When EA Sports secured a deal to feature official NBA teams and players for their new basketball computer game in 1989, even they had no idea the juggernaut they were launching.
In 1991, Sega Genesis/MegaDrive gamers got a direct port of Lakers vs. Celtics (and the NBA Playoffs) and along with the runaway success of Madden football, EA was arguably the biggest sports game creator on the block within five years.
It may not look it, but everything we know and love about playing modern basketball video games can trace their roots to this game. That said, Lakers vs. Celtics definitely hasn't aged well and doesn't measure up gameplay-wise to even some of their 8-bit generation predecessors.
Even so, its impact on everything that followed cannot be overstated or denied!
