And so, we come to the final stream of the year... and this might end up going almost as long as the very first stream of this year. That's right, it's time for me to finally bite the bullet and play through the entire Spyro the Dragon trilogy on the original PlayStation. If my previous streams haven't made it clear, 3D platformers have definitely been an Achilles' heel for me... particularly those from the fifth generation. I don't know if it's a case of the game themselves been janky or the same spacial awareness issue that made me incapable of being good at beat-'em-ups until I realized that lining up shadows is my best bet for success. The point is, that sub-genre and I have rarely gotten along since.
My first impression of the original Spyro is that... it's incredibly slippery. Like, INCREDIBLY slippery. I haven't really encountered that much in the way of precision platforming as of yet, but if they decide to ramp up the level design as I continue on, things could get hectic. Also, it's really weird how much peril there is within the hub worlds themselves. Boss fights are kind of tedious too, especially after you learn the patterns.
To say I'm not really enjoying this feels a bit harsh, but man, I was way more into the Crash Bandicoot games during the PS1 era... and my first impressions definitely reinforce that viewpoint, big time. Hopefully things pick up with later games, which KI seems to imply they will.
