Star Ocean: First Departure R - Part 2/6 - Nintendo Switch - スターオーシャン ~ Arena Battles & Slimes
I hesitated long before choosing to play this remake version over the SFC (SNES) original, which I also own. But, because I didn't feel like breaking my head trying to translate the original, I went for the remake, which was on sale on the eShop. I obviously also chose the Japanese voices, and the original PSP ones. After we finished the game, we checked the second Japanese dub, and yeah, I think the one used in this playthrough is much better!
The game's battle system has all characters moving at once, and you can only control one at a time but you can pause the game to switch at any time. Otherwise, the AI controls your other party members. It works pretty well. The game has an extensive SP point attribution system which you can use to develop skills or character stats, and there are group skills and super skills, too. It's a little overbearing. You can mix materials, blacksmith weapons, appraise items... and special items are needed to accomplish these skills, too. I thought there was just too much stuff, but I can see why others would love it. In any case, you can still beat the game by ignoring most of it.
Star Ocean is not an easy game. I died multiple times during battles and had to grind in some spots. If you like your JRPGs to be on the hard side, the Star Ocean franchise is probably for you. As a final note, the original game was developed by the same team that had made Tales of Phantasia just before, so the games are quite similar. But in the end, the Tales franchise became much more prolific than Star Ocean did.
