Panzer Dragoon Saga - Part 6/6 - Sega Saturn - アゼル パンツァードラグーン RPG ~ Sestren
How do you turn a rail shooter into an RPG? This is how! AZEL: Panzer Dragoon RPG (or Panzer Dragoon Saga in English) is one heck of an impressive game. Team Andromeda decided to make the third game in the series an RPG, and they succeeded! You still fly your dragon around like you did in the previous two games, but battles are usually encountered randomly, and turn-based using an active system.
Wait for your gauges to fill, and then choose an action. You can move around your enemies and be positioned in one of four positions (front, back, left, right), and many enemies will have weak points only visible from a specific position. Some will also be resistant to certain types of attacks. You can use your regular gun or your dragon's lasers, and also launch special attacks. You can also cast defensive "spells" or heal yourself.
Your dragon will naturally evolve over the course of the game, but you can also tinker with its stats and characteristics, thus changing its strengths and weaknesses as well as its appearance. I only briefly dabbed into it to check it out, but mostly I kept my dragon standard for the entire game. Depending on your dragon's shape, some spells can be learned faster.
That's not to say all is perfect. The game has incredibly cryptic side quests that are practically impossible to find if you're not using a guide, such as talking to that same NPC 26 times before you finally trigger her side quest. A lot of it requires backtracking to old areas, too, when your laser is powered up later in the game. And the game's greatest sin to me is that there are permanently missable items or secrets. For example, I could never get the dragon's final secret evolution because I had missed an item at the very beginning of the game. There are also some areas I wish were a little smaller.
The game is choke full of FMVs, and the story is pretty well developed. The Panzer Dragoon universe they expanded on here is really well-made.
Ultimately, Azel is a fun game that's truly one of a kind. I can see why it's such a holy grail. Is it worth the $2000 asking price it goes for online, though? Absolutely not. If you understand some Japanese, you can save a ton of money by getting the Japanese version.
