The Oberth-class starship was a small Federation vessel primarily used for scientific research and exploration from the late 23rd century into the 24th century. Designed with a distinctive split-hull configuration, it featured a compact upper section housing the bridge and crew quarters, while the lower engineering section was connected via pylons. These ships were lightly armed, equipped with phaser banks and deflector shields, but were not intended for combat. Instead, they excelled in astronomical studies, planetary surveys, and transport missions. Notable vessels of this class included the USS Grissom, which was assigned to study the Genesis Planet, and the USS Pegasus, which was controversially used to test an illegal Federation cloaking device. Despite their limited combat capabilities, Oberth-class ships occasionally participated in major conflicts, such as the Battle of Wolf 359 and the Battle of Sector 001, though they were not frontline warships. By the late 24th century, the class was gradually phased out in favor of more advanced science vessels.
