One of the most frustrating things about the 1st (2015) Star Wars Battlefront game is that all the DLC maps were only available in the game's online multiplayer and never got ported across into the single player skirmish mode. This meant that as players started to drift away from the game, those DLC maps were effectively lost forever, as you needed other online players to access them. It's incredibly frustrating as the DLC maps included some of the most iconic locations from the original Trilogy. I really don't get why EA DICE couldn't be fucked to add at least some of them into Skirmish. I mean, surely the maps on Scariff and Bespin that already featured Walker Assault and the Fighter Squadron ones would've been pretty straightforward to add to the existing roster? (Not that I know anything about coding mind you.)

You'd think as well that the developers of the game would've wanted all their hard work in realising these iconic Star Wars environments, in such a beautiful way, to have had some kind of lasting artistic legacy. But, pffft, what do I know, I'm not a greedy and amoral publishing behemoth like EA. Instead, they seemed quite happy to let these works of art gradually become more and more inaccessible, as online player numbers dwindled, and eventually then become impossible for players in the future to ever experience. It also greatly fucks me off that content I paid is now more-or-less unusable. In fact, there's no more or less about it, without other players in the game, it's impossible to access these maps. I suppose we should be grateful that at least 2 of them did eventually make it into BF2...

Fortunately, someone called Reece Taylor decided to take matters into his own hands and has partially rectified EA's glaring oversight, by creating a mod for the PC version of the game that lets you access some of the DLC maps in Skirmish mode. The mod's been out for awhile, but I only found out about it recently and gave it a try for the first time yesterday.

There are several DLC maps that are presented, but I could only get 2 working (which I think is normal, the ChangeLog for this version of the mod mentions none of the Scariff maps work). The Cloud City Walker Assault and the Fighter Squadron Death Star Imperial Blockade. In the Walker Assault, you're playing as a rebel, even though the player skin is a Storm Trooper (I think one part of the mod does this and can be reverted to Rebel skins). There are no AI characters other than some Viper Probe droids that will mercilessly gun you down if they lock on. You can also be killed by the AT AT if you walk across it's line of fire. Although I'm playing as a Rebel, it's possible to get in the AT AT and shoot the Probe droids (you just need to walk up to it and press the interact button - what I was trying to do near the start of the video when I got killed by it's foot). Once you're at the helm there's no time limit on how long you can stay in the AT AT - I had to keep remembering that I'm actually supposed to be destroying it.

The probe droids were a bit annoying at first as they kept killing me in seconds. Once I figured out the twin tactics of either one shotting them with an Ion Missile or trying to get right up close and blasting them from a crouching position just underneath them (so they can't get a line of sight to shoot and instakill you) the game got quite enjoyable and almost started to feel like it could be some kind of a new 'hunt the probe droid' gameplay mode.

Sadly, this mod appears to be a dead project now, so it doesn't look like we'll get to experience any additional single player DLC goodness, but what is presented here is frankly amazing as it is, and something I didn't think I'd ever see again.
