1996, N64. Rating: 3 out of 4 stars

Shadows of the Empire, one of the earliest efforts for the Nintendo 64 is an interesting hybrid of a game that does a little of everything. There are some straightforward shooter levels (with multiple camera perspectives to pick from), levels where you get to fly different ships and a couple of on-rails levels. There is a decent amount of content in the 10 levels and enough variety to keep it from going stale. Shadows doesn’t do any one thing excellently, but it does most quite well.

The first and final missions might be the best of the bunch because you get to fly around and have control of different ships. The game starts with the Battle of Hoth, which is a good intro to the game’s mechanics. The missions that follow go all over the place as Dash Rendar, a faux-Han Solo, is caught up in the Rebel Alliance’s mission to stop the crime syndicate Black Sun from killing Luke Skywalker and get the plans for the second Death Star. There are a few cameos from Boba Fett and IG-88 as boss fights and some other familiar faces.

The visuals are decent and the art direction is quite inspired in spots with Ord Mantell, the fourth level, being a particular standout. Other levels like Xizor’s Palace aren’t as interesting. They feel like a bunch of endless corridors. Controls are decent, but platforming, particularly in the fourth and fifth stages, can be precarious. The music and sound effects will be pleasing to Star Wars fans, but the scores can be repetitive after a while.

As an early Nintendo 64 game, it gets the job done. Ditto as a Star Wars game. It’s more than passable, but it falls well short of being anything truly memorable.
