2000, N64. Rating: 3 out of 4 stars

While it couldn’t be Goldeneye 007, developer Eurocom did a credible job creating a well-rounded and engaging game based on Brosnan’s third outing in the role. Apart from a section designed to replace the boat chase in the pre-credits sequence, the game largely hews to the general narrative structure. The 14 levels have enough variety in tone and approach to keep the game from feeling too repetitive. The on-rails ski mission and the final mission in the submarine are the only ones that feel out of place and don’t work as well as the others. They even opted for a stealth mission and the opening of a level to require stealth, which is a nice touch. The gadgets, mostly in the form of a tricked-out watch with four different weapons, also get decent use throughout the game and come in handy. Menuing from item to item might be a little jarring at first, but it works quite well and is intuitive. The visuals are solid and don’t have too many jags or framerate issues. The soundtrack isn’t especially diverse, but the tunes used are memorable enough. Apart from John Cleese actually voicing R, the voiceovers are amateurish. Luckily, the game’s pacing keeps it from dragging the game to a halt. While it isn’t Goldeneye 007 by any stretch, it’s a worthy first-person shooter that finds its own identity and doesn’t try to emulate its predecessor. It works and plays well and given the other Bond games of that era, that in of itself is an achievement. Getting an above average game is a bonus.
