Its cinematic presentation and impressive 3D graphics earned Starblade critical acclaim upon release. Sinclair User named it "Best Use of 3D Technology" along with Atari Games' Steel Talons and Microprose's B.O.T.T.S for its impressive technology and "finger down-the-throat" gameplay. For its cinematic atmosphere and 3D graphics, Computer and Video Games called it "truly exhilarating experience". They praised the game's vibrating seat and cabinet design but criticized its short length and inability to manually control the ship. In 1998, Japanese magazine Gamest named it one of the best arcade games ever for its groundbreaking 3D graphics and presentation. The game placed 96th on Flux's 1995 "Top 100 Video Games." Cashbox promised "on an exciting journey into space where you become totally absorbed in a challenging battle against enemy starships". Its 3D graphics and large arcade cabinet captivated them. Retro Gamer called the game a "graceful space ballet" for its rail shooter gameplay and technology. Starblade influenced Star Fox, Panzer Dragoon, and Rez.
