So yes, of course, there's value in playing games 'vanilla'/as-released first, before adding modded content, to experience what it was 'supposed to be like', or to avoid additions from the modder(s) that some people feel either hurt the vanilla experience, or require some degree of familiarity with the mechanics of the game to get into.
I am not one of those people.
While I understand that like, playing a total conversion mod for a game will radically transform the fundamental experience, I don't believe (based on what I read) that the mods I used (primarily Stardew Valley Expanded, https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/3753 , and a bunch of ancillary mods recommended by the creators thereof) fall under that criteria. Instead, they just add on new content/progression to the game, with the vanilla experience remaining intact underneath.
This is how I approach many sandbox/open-world games with any sort of modding infrastructure, to be honest. Most of the enjoyment *I* derive from them is from finding a new item, a new character, a new location - the joy of discovery and all that. Others can be content with a comparatively small amount of unique things, but enjoy interacting with those things within the rules of the base game.
