Quick Guide on how to get the first legendary really early in the game 1-2 hours of starting, it's kind of a farm (save/re-load farm) until you get a good item.
You can do this at the first planet you land on in your main quest, Kreet Resarch Lab on the roof.
Save before you got out to the 3 pirates on the roof, then defeat them, the pirate leader Brogran is able to drop legendary items, so if you don't get any from him, just reload and try again.

I got about 1 legendary every 6-10 re-load i did, but it's pretty random, i also got 2 in a row at some point.
