Starstrike II - Spectrum Longplay
Spectrum 48k
Quite different to the previous game which was definitely inspired by the Star Wars arcade game. While that game was endless (constantly looping levels) this game has 25 planets to conquer. 25 to many as the game is way to long and very repetitive due to the slow speed. Getting through the whole game on one life is very tedious and the ending isnt exactly rewarding for doing so.
I start the game quite badly as I try to work out what the game wants from me and what I should avoid. Coupled with bad fuel management early on I didn't think I would make it to the end. Those planet shields can be a real pain to get through unscathed and the space section was really the only level where i could replenish fuel without the support pod. Have to real careful here though as the pod is easily destroyed accidentally. Space combat was probably the most annoying part. Left-right controls are really sensitive, and up-down hardly any movement at all which makes aiming all the more difficult. I rush the final level and play very recklessly as I didn't intend to play any more levels.
Comparing this version against footage of the Amstrad version, I'm surprised to say that I think the Amstrad version is actually faster and with colour no less. Also the Amstrad version has music which is another shocker.
While a High quality version will appear on the longplays site/channel, I decided to upload here as well showing the RF tv filter of Spectaculator. Its probably the best pal emulation of any emu mimicking the yellow hue around black lines. With certain patterns this can be exploited to add additional colour to an otherwise mono screen.
