Steel Assault has multiple difficulties the player can choose when playing story mode. These difficulties are Very Easy, Easy, Normal, and Expert. The difference between Normal and Expert are minimal but enough to change how you approach the game. Normal has multiple checkpoints throughout a level, the players take one damage from enemies and some enemies take double damage from the player. Expert difficulty changes all theses things. If the player dies anywhere in the stage they will have to restart the stage over, checkpoints are removed. The player now takes two points of damage effectively halving the players health. Finally, the enemies that would take double damage now take regular damage and the fights are now longer. As difficult as expert mode is it doesn't compare to Arcade difficulty. One death there and the player gets sent back to stage 1, no matter how close they were to beating the game.
