I first played this game back in 1996, and I also bought Steel Panthers one year earlier. I bought both games at the computer show, so back in the 1990s there was something called a computer show. On the weekends, a sponsor organized an event where vendors would come together to sell computers, computer parts, electronics, floppy disks, and computer peripherals for almost wholesale prices. The vendors would make their money by selling their wares in bulk. If ever went to show as a vendor, you would pay the sponsor a hundred dollars or more to get a table. You would put all your stuff on that table and sell it. Since the people who go to computer shows or any shows want to buy something there, you will sell more stuff there than trying to sell it at your small retail store.

When you went to a computer show as a buyer, you would typically pay anywhere from $5 to $10 to get in. I usually bought a lot of stuff when I went to these computer shows, and they pretty much had everything I wanted at the prices that I wanted. I would go there to buy games, computer parts, computer books, and software. Typically, the games wouldn't come with boxes, but some games did come with boxes. I bought Dark Forces in 1995 for about $20, but that game didn't come with a box. It just came with CD jewel case.

As for Steel Panthers II, it was a typical 1990s turn based hexa mapped strategy game. SSI was known for making great strategy games, like the Panzer General series, and they also made a lot Dungeons and Dragons type role playing games. Strategic Simulations Inc was founded in 1979, so it was a company that existed in the very early days of computer gaming. The Steel Panthers series is a reflection of their dedication to turn based strategy games. SSI merged with Mindscape in 1994, and they continued to make games under the SSI brand. The games SSI produced was Panzer General 3D, the game used 3d graphics with a 3d accelerator, but it was a turn based game. By 2000, people wanted to play real time strategy games, like Starcraft and Warcraft. Times change, and if companies don't adjust to these changes they usually fall by the wayside. Mindscape didn't go under until 2011, but they stopped making games under the SSI banner, because it was no longer profitable to do so.

Steel Panthers is a very long game, and it takes a lot of time to play. This game is very much like Steel Panthers I, but the only difference is this game is set after World War 2. You get to learn about modern warfare. You get to learn about stabilizers for tanks, thermal optics, night vision, laser range finders, different types of armor, etc. In real life, a tank cannot shoot accurately when it is moving, but if the gun is stabilized it can shoot with more accuracy while moving than a tank that doesn't have it. A laser range finder is another feature modern tanks have, a laser is pointed at the target, and some of the beam reflects back. Then, a computer finds the distance to the target, and information is fed into the computer. Then, computer finds out what the elevation angle is to shoot the shells, there is no guess work when firing at the enemy. Thermal optics is a piece of equipment which enables you to see heat signature of your target, so if you enemy is hiding behind brush. You can see them. You can see your enemies even when there is a smoke screen in front of you.

In the game, if your tanks or armored fighting vehicles have a fire control rating of 35 to 40 then they the guns are stabilized, your vehicle has a laser range finder, and you also have thermal optics. This would be for main battle tanks, like M1A1, M1A2, Leopard 2, Leclerc, K1, K1A1, T-80s/T-90s, Type 90 (Japan), Ariete, upgraded M60, etc.

Then, you have tanks that have just laser range finders and night vision, like tanks with fire control rating of 20 to 30. These tanks would be tanks, like the Type 74 (Japan), T-72, M60, Type 85/90 (China), Centurion, T-62, etc. All in all, this game is very realistic even if it is a turn based game. In order to play this game well, you have to understand the military hardware that you are using.
