I've been experimenting with magnetic build plates using steel sheets. Working really well, especially with the thinner sheet. Tried PEI and FlashForge build surface. Maker Muse says the latter is like BuildTak. The guy at the local 3D print shop I bought from said he preferred it to BuildTak. I'm afraid I might damage the PEI when using the spatula. The FlashForge surface seems tough and durable, like the OEM sheet. I started with Ferrite magnets but these were rather weak so I switched to strong neodymium magnets. Downside is these have a max temp of 80°C, so no ABS printing for me with this setup. There are special high temp neo magnets but not easy to source (for me anyway). If you are in the US, http://appliedmagnets.com/bar-magnets-2-in-x-1-2-in-x-1-8-in-high-temp-n42sh-neodymium-magnets-p-608.html, cheap!
If you know where to source springsteel that's 165mmx165mm or larger in Australia, please let me know! Actually, I found a place, http://www.dawbornsteels.com.au/ but they sell very large sheets so it's quite pricey to just want a small piece.
I bought my Ender 2 from GearBest
