Steel Talons was a helicopter simulator released by Atari in 1991, and it is very much like LHX Attack Chopper released by Electronic Arts one year earlier. I played this game in the arcades back in the early 1990s, and I have to say the controls were terrible for this game. It wasn't very responsive and that made the game difficult. As you can see in the game play, it is difficult to complete even simple tasks. The good thing about this game are the graphics and this is why people were attracted to it. The graphics were very much like Hard Drivin which was another Atari arcade released 2 years earlier.

Simulator games of the late 1980s and early 1990s used polygonal graphics. They didn't have the technology to add a lot of textures to those geometric shapes, because the processing computers of this time were limited. The sound was good in this game, for you had voices. Sound chip technology pretty much reached the pinnacle of its development by the mid 1990s. Now sound cards are integrated on every motherboard and it is a standard feature.

In the early 1990s, there was a interest in 3d simulators whether they be for cars or for cars. From 1989 to 1994, you had a lot of great simulators released, like LHX Attack Chopper, Falcon 3.0, Red Baron, Knights of the Sky, Stunts, A-10 Tank Killer, Test Drive 3, X-plane, Chuck Yeager's Air Combat, Wing Commander (1, 2, 3), Aces of the Pacific, Aces over Europe, Wing Commander Privateer, Gunship 2000, Tie Fighter, Dog Fighter, Birds of Prey, Strike Commander, and many others. This is why Atari tried to capitalize on this theme, but it didn't quite live up to being a good simulator. Furthermore, most simulator games were played by PC gamers, and they weren't really interested in arcade or console games. The reason for this is that, you needed a keyboard to play flight simulator, because you needed a keyboard to use all the controls on a flight simulator. For example, a flight simulator will have rudder controls, MFS(Multi Function display) controls, landing gear controls, weapon selection, communication to the tower and with other aircraft, view changes, etc. For these reasons, arcade simulators were never successful. The kind of people who like to play flight simulators are usually nerds, they aren't the average person. I guess flight simulators were popular in the late 1980s to the mid 1990s, because computers were still complex to operate. You needed to know Dos commands, and the average person wasn't using PCs at the time. PC games had to be configured correctly if you wanted to play games, so it was a real chore to get it to run. Generation X learned a lot of hardcore computer skills by being able to really use computers. Many of us learned how to program and other useful tech skills during this period. It later translated to us finding very good jobs and careers from the skills we learned in the 1980s to the 1990s. My generation or generation x were interested in simulator games, but the market for it dwindled as many of us had to join the workforce. So, you see this trend of the demand for simulator games drop sharply after 1999.

You can play these old games, I have a directory on my website that have links to all my videos about emulator tutorials.
