0So Steven Sharif from Ashes of Creation just made a statement in an interview recently about how his game is going to be "one of the largest and most successful" MMORPGs on the market. Really?
I'm all for creative directors making bold statements to drive hype and share passion for their project, but it's statements like these which always make me cringe, because if your project ever suffers even the most minor of setbacks, these are the statements that come back to bite you in the ass.
There's no doubt that Ashes of Creation is poised to be a successful indie MMO, but "one of the largest and most successful" remains to be seen, and your own internal metrics aren't what determine that. The market determines. And as we've seen from many games like New World or Crowfall, even having big pre-launch sales doesn't enable you to have an automatic hit on your hands.
