In late 1946 and early 1947, Orson Welles directed The Lady from Shanghai for Columbia Pictures. The film was largely shot on location, in Acapulco, Pie de la Cuesta, Sausalito and San Francisco.

Subsequently, Columbia re-purposed some of the films’ outtakes as stock footage to be utilised in other studio productions. Seventy years later, these outtakes were uploaded as part of a collection of 35mm library material hosted on the website for the Internet Archive.

The following is a compilation of the footage we’ve been able to find that we believe was filmed for or featured in The Lady from Shanghai, though there may be more on the site we didn’t find, and some of the following inclusions may be in error. Please feel free to discuss on the comments below.

The following outtakes, the first in Acapulco and the second set in a theater in San Francisco’s Chinatown, are the only ones with the names of Welles and his cinematographer Charles Lawton Jr. on the opening slates.

While Orson Welles may have participated in the filming of the rest of this footage, the names on the slates are most likely the following acting as second unit photography:
BUTLER - Lawrence Butler
CASTLE - William Castle
WIMPY - Rexford Wimpy
