Stop Behind The Net Passes From Going In | Hockey Goalie Tips Ep 7
In this video, I will show you how to stop behind the net passes from going in.
Quick shots from behind the net passes are hard because it feels like you need to be in 2 places at once. But actually, you don’t. Let’s break it down.
Number 1
How close is the player to the back of the net?
Your job as a goalie is to understand all the potential scoring opportunities. If the player with the puck is skating close to the back of the net, there is a good chance they might attempt a wrap-around.
However, in this situation, the forward with the puck was actually along the boards and so they wouldn’t have been able to use a wrap-around from where they were.
Thus eliminating the first scoring opportunity.
Number 2
Where are the opposing players?
In order to understand the potential scoring opportunities, you need to understand where everyone is at all times.
When the opposing team entered our zone, my focus was 100% on the puck. Once the puck was picked up by their team, I should have taken a moment to see where the other players were.
This would have given me an indication as to where all potential passes could go.
If you are not constantly scanning your surroundings, you’ll have to rely on your reflexes and athletic abilities rather than just being in the right position at all times.
It is always better to be proactive and in the right position than to rely on your reflexes.
Number 3
Can you stay on your feet?
If I had recognized that there were two players open in front and the player with the puck was not going to do a wrap-around, I could have made the conscious decision to stay on my feet which would have allowed me to c cut out to the top of my crease, giving myself a better chance at stopping that puck.
Also if I was on my feet, I could have easily used my stick to try and stop the pass from getting through to the player in front eliminating the opportunity completely.
Now, this type of play may seem easy to stop but have you ever had to stop a no-shot shot? Whether or not you have, make sure to watch this video right here so you will never get beat by it.
