Straight to Godrick
Running some stability adjustment on PC and more or less preparing myself for the DLC by trying to tighten up and expand a lot more of how I understand the game to work. Throwing Knives on Margit wasn't something I'd expect to take a lot of the downtime off of the fight, much less ensure I get a lot more stance breaks.
I did initially try to approach the fight with the Halberd and, frankly, it's not a fun weapon in terms of my personal style so it was a bad fit. Square Off is an incredibly useful Weapon Art in terms of approaching the beginning of the game and preventing a lot of ankle biting/waiting. You can deal significant damage in bursts and it creates good rhythms to play around.
The throwing knives really help to manipulate and force Margit's programming to engage you, vs waiting and trying to entice him to attack you in any number of ways that may just lead to a reset at best. Which, frankly, still happens given his ability to backstep away from you.
Otherwise, this felt very standard. I only recently tried to really fight Godrick at a lower level of power and I like the way he works, despite how annoying that characterization is relative to how I have to play, his openings feel "real" and he behaves in ways that fall in line with how I would ideally want a fight to function.
Standing at specific ranges coaxes him into doing certain things, there's not a lot of annoying flourishes or camera nonsense. Terrain is still WEIRD in Elden Ring, so enemies don't really feel designed well in terms of how they'll behave when they sometimes make contact with the ground. They'll land "weird" and get all sorts of bizarre animation cancels or hang ups.
On the whole, I feel like the amount of time I've spent with the game, this is more of a milestone than is going to come across. The fact of the matter is no one really just gets to play something, the grift of this all just spoils it.
But I was glad to meet my challenge objective. It's nice not to just go around doing side stuff feeling like Godrick is just sort of a huge, arbitrary waste of time. It does feel better to just go straight to him now.
