Like a lot of people, I spent most of June playing Street Fighter 6. More specifically, I spent most of June playing Street Fighter’s World Tour mode, a fully-realized adventure game where you create your own avatar and take on the Mad Gear gang while training under the likes of Chun-Li and Ken. It’s an absolute blast and one of the best bonus modes ever packaged with a fighting game. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love Tekken Bowling and Mortal Kombat Karts, but I’m not about to put 40 hours into either of those modes.
As somebody who has spent way too long beating up that mime in Metro City, I’ll freely admit that the World Tour has its share of problems. The writing is pretty corny, you can see the twists coming a mile away and most of the stops on the world tour are the size of a postcard. Yet, there’s something really cool about taking the Street Fighter gameplay and applying it to a role-playing game. It forces you to think about the one-on-one fights in a different way, and I love how it makes me care about these characters and the world they exist in.
So, forget Final Fantasy XVI and all those so-called serious adventure games, because I’m here to say that Street Fighter 6 is the best role-playing game since Final Lap Twin.
