Review: I am a bit of a Street Fighter veteran and have played them all since street fighter 2 (even entered a tournament for Super Turbo HD remix), so I have skin in the game for this release. After loving street fighter 4 and then being disappointed by Street Fighter 5 (although I didn’t play enough to give an honest critique due to the tiny amount of in-game content), I am pleased to say that Street Fighter 6 has brought the series back.
They always have to make a new battle system, and this new Drive system is great. This is where you can absorb the damage of an attack and counter with another attack. It seems like a really cheap parry. But you can still use a regular parry, but this is only used to build up the drive gauge.
The new characters and move sets are great. Love how they have simplified the commands so pretty much all the moves are done with the traditional down to towards or down to back motion. This is great for using new characters that you haven’t memorised the move set for. This really makes you question why they even used so much variation in motion in the old games. There are 3 super moves for each character too depending on your Super gauge. The move sets for the are really easy to remember too. Super 1 is always down to towards twice and either punch or kick. Then super 2 uses the same but a back motion with either punch or kick, and then the 3rd super carries the same pattern and goes forward again with punch or kick depending on what Super 1 used. This is an excellent system where I was able to quickly memorise the commands before each arcade playthrough with new characters and never have to pause to check the move set during gameplay.
There is even a control system for new players to be able to use special moves more easily and not be hindered by the not having years of experience in pulling of the moves. This is a great system as I always found that a fighting game should not be about the finger dexterity, but the fighting tactics of the brain.
I have to say that the characters are all beasts in this. They are just so well armed with lots of powerful special moves. Capcom have really spoiled us. My first character to choose was E.Honda because he is my favourite classic character but Street Fighter 4 ruined him. I was shocked by how much a of a beast he is, and how many options there are for getting through fireballs since he has always struggled with fireball characters. He even has a specific move to “clap” the fireballs out of the sky.
There are a lot of modes in this game, which they have overcompensated for the lack of modes in Street Fighter 5. I would say that a lot are unnecessary, and I won’t be using them.
There is an online arcade room which they expect people to use to be sociable and even meet on physical arcade to wait for someone to walk up and join them for a match. Completely pointless when you can just join a game instantly in the regular online mode. When I played, the room was completely dead as I was the only person walking around the European server, but it could have been due to playing between 1-8 in the morning (just had a baby so stayed up to do all night feeds LOL). I might be wrong but I think this mode will die out quickly.
The other main mode is the Story mode. Different from the arcade mode, you control a custom-made character and build him up, RPG style to be a tough fighter. You can even pick fights on the street to earn XP. The problem with this, although the idea is new to a Street Fighter game, the story fees very dated. It’s like an Xbox 360 game. The missions are plentiful but pointless. Everything seems like a reason just to drag out the game. It’s crap to start the game as an underpowered peon when all the amazing characters are available from the start of the game.
It’s a nice attempt to add content and value to the game but after learning that it takes about 30 hours to complete, I sharply ended my playthrough.
There is an extreme mode that gives the player various circumstances to fight within, such as having a bull flying across the screen regularly. This is just a bit of fun, but no one is going to spend much time with it. Again, this is an attempt to add content to right the wrongs of Street Fighter 5.

Despite the little niggles, the core game is solid. The bits that I don’t like, I wouldn’t expect to be in the game anyway, so they are just there for people that demand more content. And with the new control system for newbies, this is a great game for everyone.
