Street Fighter II (Master System) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of TecToy's 1997 versus-fighting game for the Sega Master System, Street Fighter II.
This extremely late release Master System game was a Brazil-exclusive title and was officially licensed by Sega.
Played through with Blanka on the normal difficulty level.
This surprising release was apparently quite popular when it was released (owing to the popularity of the SMS through the late 90s in Brazil due to its low cost and continued support through TecToy), but I have a hard time seeing why, really. Sure, it gave people something that superficially resembled Street Fighter II on the 8-bit console, and the screenshots make it look promising.
But does anyone remember how the 1992 US Gold PC ports turned out? They looked great in screenshots, but were completely awful in just about everyway. The SMS port isn't quite that terrible, but it's not a huge step up. The Gameboy port was far more faithful than this was.
Anyways, the characters look great despite having most of their animation frames cut, the music is alright by Master System standards, and amazingly, the voice samples are much clearer than the ones in the Genesis port! The backgrounds have gone through the shredder, though, and only vaguely resemble the original game's stages.
The real problem, though, is the gameplay. You only have one punch and one kick because of the controller, and each character only has two special moves - though I suppose it doesn't matter too much since they're all virtually impossible to pull off consistently. Throws are also out, as far as I can tell. The AI is beyond cheap, spamming specials and instantly pulling off moves that the player is required to charge in order to do - Bison and Guile are particularly bad in that regard. The collision detection is also really goofy, so be prepared to whiff a lot of hits.
The game came on a 8meg cart, which is quite impressive, but I have to ask where it all went. I mean, four characters of the 12 are missing, along with the map screen and all of the match wrap-up screens! Considering it's the same size as many of the early SNES games, and bigger than many early Genesis titles (as well as twice the size of the GB port that left most of these things intact), well, it doesn't bode well.
It's an interesting novelty sheerly because it officially exists, but don't bother trying to play it. If you want a good Sega 8-bit fighter, boot up Fatal Fury or Samurai Shodown on the Game Gear instead.
