Strider arcade vs Genesis - complete game Utterly Pointless Comparisons ep 002 [720p60]
Welcome to another installment of Utterly Pointless Comparisons, in which we take an utterly pointless look at the arcade and Genesis versions of Strider.
If you're impatient, the comparison starts at 5:27.
[UPDATE: Also minor correction, added that the 4 layers on CPS1 boards meant three layers for scrolling plus a UI layer.]
People have been throwing some shade at this game lately, many of them reviewing it poorly on the recently released Genesis mini. We all have opinions, man, and I very strongly disagree with those reviews. But we're civilized damn it, we can disagree without getting frothy about it!
If you ask me, and you didn't, Strider is one of the best arcade games ever made. The Genesis version also won EGM's (Electronic Gaming Monthly) game of the year in their 1990 buyer's guide - which I still have a copy of buried somewhere in a closet.
Anyway a few bonus differences not mentioned in the video.
1. The Genesis version actually has two layers of parallax scrolling in an area where the arcade only has one. It's in level three as you jump up with the walls closing in on you.
2. The arcade one has a much larger tile set with more unique bits and bobs in the background.
3. Some elements, like the brontosauruses/brachiosauruses in the fourth level are wider in the Genesis version. It's likely they were ripped directly from the arcade one because of its larger resolution on the x axis.
4. Music - the original arcade release of Strider used the level 1 music as the only song in levels 3 and 5. There was a later revision of the game that includes all the music present from the Genesis version. I have NEVER seen the version with all the music from the Genesis in the arcade, I have only ever seen the one that repeats the level 1 music -and I played a lot of Strider in the arcade back in the day.
5. When Strider Hiryu jumps straight up in the arcade game, he makes a fist with his hands. When he jumps straight up in the Genesis version his hands are wide open.
6. Yes, the Genesis version has significantly more slowdown than the arcade version. Probably should have mentioned that one. Oh well!
So there you have it, enjoy the video!
