Strike Gunner S.T.G. is a vertically scrolling shoot ‘em up game developed by Athena and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1992.

Plot

The game is set in a futuristic world where Earth is under attack by an alien invasion, and the player takes control of an advanced fighter jet known as the “Strike Gunner.” You must defend Earth from the invaders by flying through various levels and defeating waves of enemies.

Gameplay

Strike Gunner S.T.G. is known for its cooperative two-player mode and extensive weapon system. It features:

• Vertical Scrolling: The game follows a traditional vertical-scrolling shooter format, where players move upwards while enemies and obstacles come from the top of the screen.
• Weapon Selection: One of the game’s unique aspects is the ability to select a special weapon at the beginning of each stage. The arsenal includes homing missiles, lasers, flamethrowers, and more. However, once you choose a special weapon for that stage, you cannot change it until the next level.
• Co-op Mode: The game shines in two-player mode, where two players can join forces to fight the enemy, making it a memorable experience for friends to play together.

Graphics and Sound

For its time, Strike Gunner S.T.G. had decent graphics and sound effects, taking advantage of the SNES’s capabilities to offer smooth scrolling, colorful explosions, and detailed backgrounds. The music, while not groundbreaking, complements the intense action well.

Reception

While not as popular as some other SNES shooters, Strike Gunner S.T.G. was appreciated for its variety of weapons, cooperative gameplay, and challenging stages. However, some players felt the game’s difficulty could be unforgiving, especially in later stages.

Overall, it’s a solid entry in the shoot ’em up genre on the SNES.
